Credit & Finance

Where are you on your financial journey?
Answer honestly — your roadmap will be customized to your starting point.
The 10-Step Credit & Finance Roadmap
Pull All 3 Credit Reports
Get free reports at AnnualCreditReport.com. Review Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion for errors, negative items, and accounts you don't recognize.
Dispute Inaccurate Items
Write formal dispute letters to each bureau. Under the FCRA, bureaus must investigate and respond within 30 days. Keep copies of everything.
Set Up a Debt Payoff Plan
Use the Snowball Method (smallest balance first) or Avalanche Method (highest interest first). Both work — choose the one you'll actually stick to.
Open a Secured Credit Card
If rebuilding, a secured card (deposit-backed) lets you build positive payment history. Use it for small purchases and pay in full monthly.
Build a 3-Month Emergency Fund
Start with $1,000, then build to 3 months of expenses. Keep it in a separate high-yield savings account. This protects credit during setbacks.
Get Your EIN & Open a Business Bank Account
Register your EIN free at IRS.gov. Open a dedicated business checking account immediately — this is the foundation of your business financial identity.
Register with Business Credit Bureaus
Set up profiles with Dun & Bradstreet (DUNS number), Experian Business, and Equifax Business. These are separate from your personal credit.
Open Net-30 Vendor Accounts
Apply for vendor accounts that report to business credit bureaus (Uline, Quill, Grainger). Pay on or before the due date to build your Paydex score.
Apply for a Business Credit Card
Once you have 3–6 months of business banking history and vendor accounts, apply for a business credit card. Use it for business expenses only.
Pursue Funding & Grants
With solid credit and financials, apply for SBA microloans, CDFI loans, MBDA grants, and local small business programs. Keep your documents ready.
Financial Wisdom Library
The 3-Bank Method
Keep three separate accounts: (1) Operations — for bills and recurring expenses. (2) Profit — 10% of every payment received goes here, never touched. (3) Growth — for reinvestment and opportunities. This simple separation prevents cash flow chaos and builds wealth automatically.
ROSCAs — Rotating Savings & Credit Associations
A centuries-old community banking method used across Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. A group of trusted people each contribute a fixed amount monthly; one member receives the full pot each month. Known as "sou-sou" in the Caribbean and "partner" in Jamaica, ROSCAs build financial discipline and provide lump-sum capital without interest. Best for trusted, small groups with clear agreements in writing.
Black Banking History & Why It Matters
Black-owned banks were established after Reconstruction to serve communities locked out of mainstream banking. The Freedman's Bank (1865), though it failed due to mismanagement, inspired generations of Black banking pioneers. Today, Black-owned CDFIs and banks like OneUnited Bank, Carver Federal, and Liberty Bank offer business loans, mortgages, and credit-building products specifically designed for Black entrepreneurs. Banking Black keeps capital circulating in Black communities.
The 50/30/20 Budget Rule
Allocate 50% of after-tax income to needs (rent, utilities, food), 30% to wants (entertainment, dining out), and 20% to savings and debt repayment. For business owners, shift this to 40/20/40 — directing 40% toward growth and savings to build wealth faster.
Business Credit Building Track
Check off each milestone as you complete it. Your progress is saved automatically.

Legal Structure Selector
| Structure | Best For | Liability | Tax Treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sole Proprietor | Side hustles, just starting | Personal liability | Pass-through |
| LLC | Most small businesses | Protected | Flexible (default pass-through) |
| S-Corp | Profitable businesses, save on SE tax | Protected | Pass-through + salary split |
| C-Corp | Raising venture capital | Protected | Double taxation risk |
Recommendation for Most H.E.L.P. Center Clients
Start with an LLC. It protects your personal assets, is simple to maintain, and gives you flexibility to elect S-Corp taxation later when your profits justify it. File your Articles of Organization with your state Secretary of State — usually $50–$150.

Weekly Leadership Challenges
One action per week. Small moves build massive confidence.
Week 1: Speak First
In your next meeting or group setting, speak up first or second — before you talk yourself out of it. Your voice matters.
Week 2: Raise Your Rate
Identify one service you're undercharging for and increase the price by at least 20%. Send an updated proposal or announcement this week.
Week 3: Say No Once
Decline one request, opportunity, or commitment that doesn't align with your goals — without over-explaining or apologizing.
Week 4: Ask for the Room
Request a speaking opportunity, panel seat, podcast interview, or collaboration with someone whose platform is bigger than yours.
Mindset Library
Imposter Syndrome Is a Liar
Imposter syndrome — the feeling that you'll be "found out" as incompetent — affects 70% of high achievers. Research by Pauline Clance shows it's most common among high-performing women and people of color. The antidote: collect evidence of competence, not feelings about it. Keep a "wins file" — a list of real accomplishments you can review when doubt surfaces.
The Authority Principle
People follow those who act like leaders before they're recognized as one. Leadership isn't a title — it's a posture, a voice, a consistency of action. You build authority by: showing up prepared, making decisions, taking responsibility, and doing what you said you'd do. Every time. Authority is earned in small moments, not big announcements.
Confidence Is a Skill, Not a Feeling
Waiting to feel confident before acting is backwards. Confidence comes from doing the thing — especially when you're afraid. Take the action first. Analyze the result. Adjust. Repeat. Over time, your evidence base grows and the fear shrinks. Act your way into the feeling, not the other way around.
The Power of Regulation
Leaders who can self-regulate — managing their emotional responses under pressure — are consistently rated higher by their teams. Techniques: box breathing (4-4-4-4 count) before high-stakes conversations, naming the emotion ("I notice I'm feeling anxious"), and creating a pause between stimulus and response. Regulation is a leadership superpower.

Course Development

My Course
Validate before you build
Before recording a single video: get 5 conversations with people who match your target student. Ask what they have already tried, what they have spent money on, and what they wish existed. If 3 of 5 will pre-pay or sign a wait-list, you have validation. If not, refine the promise.
Modules & Lessons
Sketch out your modules and the lessons inside each. Aim for 4–8 modules with 3–5 lessons per module.
Backwards design works
Start from the final outcome and work backwards. What does a student need to know in week 4? What scaffolding did week 3 require? What did week 2 unlock? Most weak courses are weak because the order does not build.
Production Checklist
Audio & Video
Editing & Delivery
Done is better than perfect — but record the first lesson three times
The first lesson always sounds awkward. Record it on day 1, again on day 7, and again at the end of production. Use the third take. Everyone you teach will have a more polished first impression.
Pricing Tiers
Most courses sell better with 2–3 price tiers. Anchor with the highest, drive volume with the middle.
Beta cohort pricing rule
Run the first cohort at 50% off in exchange for testimonials, case studies, and feedback. Make this explicit: students get a discount, you get social proof and a chance to fix the curriculum before the full-price launch.
Launch Plan — 4 Week Sequence
Cart-close beats launch-day for sales
The last 24 hours of a launch typically deliver 30–50% of total sales. Tell your audience you are closing, mean it, and close on time. Re-opening early trains buyers to wait.
Where to Host Your Course
Pick the platform that matches your delivery
Self-paced video → Teachable / Thinkific / Podia. Cohort with community → Skool or Kajabi. Live workshop series → Zoom + a private Slack/Discord. Do not overpay for features you will not use in the first launch.
Calendar
Schedule sessions, deadlines, and business milestones
State Resources

Manage your profile, password, and AI integration
Choose your preferred AI provider and model. AI is powered securely through the H.E.L.P. Center server — no API key required.
Use a local LLM via Ollama when Groq is rate-limited. Runs on your computer with no usage cap. Required setup: start Ollama with OLLAMA_ORIGINS=* so the dashboard can reach it.
Connect to a self-hosted PocketBase server on your VPS so all client and business data is stored server-side — not just in your browser. pocketbase.io is a free, single-file Go backend. Once set up, create a collection named store with fields: key (Text, unique) and value (JSON).
Send branded confirmation emails to clients after booking. Note: Your sender email must be verified in your Resend dashboard at resend.com.
Drop in your logo and tune the brand colors. Changes apply live and re-skin the entire app — including the client portal that your clients see.
Accept invoice payments from clients via Stripe Checkout. Your secret key stays on your VPS — only the publishable key is in the browser. The Site Tag appears as a suffix on the customer's bank statement (e.g. JOY WATFORD*HELPCENTER) so you can tell which site each charge came from.
Messages your tenants send via the "Contact Owner" button in their dashboard. New messages also email you automatically.
Manage anyone running their own dashboard off your PocketBase. Each tenant gets a unique URL like ?tenant=toby, their own data, their own password. Their data is isolated by key prefix in your PB.
Every email you send through the dashboard — to clients, team members, or document recipients — is logged here. Click any row to view the full message.
Subscribe to your dashboard calendar from Google, Apple, or Outlook. New events you add here appear in your phone/laptop calendar within minutes — automatically. One-way (dashboard → your calendar). The URL is private to you; treat it like a password.
How to subscribe
Apple Calendar (Mac): Calendar app → File → New Calendar Subscription… → paste URL → set Auto-refresh to "Every hour".
Apple Calendar (iPhone/iPad): Settings → Calendar → Accounts → Add Account → Other → Add Subscribed Calendar → paste URL.
Outlook: outlook.live.com → Calendar → Add calendar → Subscribe from web → paste URL.
Send contracts for e-signature via your self-hosted DocuSeal instance. After saving, use the "Send Contract" button on any booking.
